Walt Thurner
By Bob Topham and Beverly Genis
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our friend and fellow Orange County Wine Society member and past Board Member, Walt Thurner, who passed away at his home after a long and courageous battle with oral cancer. May he rest in peace.
For more than 30 years, Walt was a dedicated and valued OCWS member. He was a past board member and an active member of the Cook’s Caucus. He served as a home wine judge for more than a decade, worked countless hours at the OC Fair and was known for stepping in to help whenever and wherever he could.
His commitment to our organization and its members reflected his quiet generosity and strong sense of community. Additionally, Walt served in the U.S. Navy and led a distinguished career at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He later served as Chief of Police at the Metropolitan State Hospital, where his leadership and dedication earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.
His family is holding a memorial service to honor and remember him on Saturday, September 12, at 2 p.m. in Clubhouse #2 of Seal Beach’s Leisure World. Your presence and support would mean the world to Dolorie and her family. Please RSVP to Dolorie at (562) 889-4932.
