SUMMARY:Varietal Hour - Sparkling Wine
DESCRIPTION:OCWS Varietal Hours continue with new themes and new attendees. If you haven’t joined our Varietal Hours by now\, here is your chance. As we continue into the final part of 2025\, we have exciting new themes and are experiencing new members joining us. We predict that 2026 will be filled with more exciting themes and revelations about wine. \nAnd the best thing? They are FREE. What started as a way of gathering during the COVID quarantines has blossomed into quality time with friends\, both old and new. And the things we have learned and been taught by this group are priceless. \nHere is our challenge to all of you: If you haven’t already attended one of these Varietal Hours\, please attend one. Yes\, just one. We promise you four things: 1) You will have fun. 2) You might just learn something\, OR you might teach us something! 3) You won’t regret spending that hour of your life. 4) And you won’t even have to drive home! \nSo picture this… Your own comfortable furniture. A glass of wine in your hand. Right there in your own house with friends\, old and new. And here’s the best part: you don’t even have to clean up everyone’s mess! We’re always happy to have new members join the fun and meet some people who enjoy wine.\nEach event has a theme\, but we never “kick anyone off the island\,” so it never matters if you follow the theme. Part of the fun is finding a wine to fit the theme The setting is very casual\, with stories told about each of the wines we’re drinking\, what we do (or don’t) like about them\, where we got them\, and more. Varietal Hours will be held every other Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. \nAll you need is a computer (or phone) and internet connection. If you are new to the Varietal Hours or to Zoom\, please feel free to contact Don Phillips at don@ocws.org for help and information\, even if it means contacting him days before the event\, and he will walk you through the process and even do a short Zoom meeting\, just for you\, to get you comfortable with the process. \nThe event is open to all OCWS members\, but sign-ups are required. Please log on to the OCWS website to register for the event no later than 7 p.m. (24 hours before the event)\, the Monday night before the event. Couples only need to sign up for one person since this event is via Zoom. A link for the Zoom meeting will be emailed to you on the day of the event. \n—Don Phillips\, OCWS Varietal Hour Chair

SUMMARY:Varietal Hour - Summer Wines
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to all of the OCWS members who have been attending the Monday evening Varietal Hours. We have been introduced to some great wineries\, varietals\, and wine growing regions. Below is a schedule for the next few months (more dates and themes will be listed in future newsletters). We hope some of you who have not joined us for this event yet will join us for a future date. \nIf you have an idea for a future theme or are interested in hosting\, please contact Carolyn at Carolyn@ocws.org or George Cravens at George@ocws.org. SUMMARY:Winemaking Webinar—Making a Plan Before Getting Grapes
DESCRIPTION:The winemaking process starts long before the grapes arrive. There is much more to it than just deciding what wine you want to make. A successful winemaker develops a “crush plan” ahead of time to determine the equipment\, supplies and steps involved all through the process from grapes to your glass. \nOn Saturday\, July 10 at 10 am\, the OCWS Winemakers’ Group presents an educational webinar showing you how to develop a “crush plan” for the upcoming harvest. Join Ed Reyes as he explains what you need to consider before jumping into making wine from grapes this fall. Ed will map out the steps involved throughout the winemaking process. Learn about any special treatment particular varietals may need. He will also share some of the tips and techniques learned from over 10 years of winemaking with the OCWS. \nWhether you are a first-time winemaker\, an experienced kit winemaker\, or just curious about the process\, join us for this informative webinar which is sure to educate and entertain. \n– The OCWS Winemakers’ Group

SUMMARY:Peppertree Canyon—Orange County’s Well-Hidden Gem
DESCRIPTION:I recently had the distinct honor of visiting Peppertree Canyon Farm to interview Owner/Winemaker\, Lynn Hess\, and found not just a winemaker\, but a person with great passion for our environment\, both globally and locally. And someone who\, along with her husband\, Mike\, has created a small oasis in the midst of the Tustin hills of Orange County that they lovingly refer to as “Tustiny.” \nLynn started winemaking from kits with the OCWS and initially\, never intended to be a winemaker but\, after not finding what she felt was a suitable winemaker for their venture\, she took enology and viticulture classes everywhere she possibly could\, from Davis to Mira Costa and San Marcos to Temecula. She was mentored by winemakers at a number of wineries in San Diego and Temecula and eventually interned at Hart. Her passion was then up and running at what could only be described as full stride. \nLynn and Mike purchased four acres in the Tustin hills in 2013\, with Mike’s vision of planting a Tuscan farm and making olive oils and Brunellos. They planted over 100 olive trees (Frantoios\, Pendolinos and Leccinos) and over 1\,400 vines\, mostly Sangiovese. The property was fill dirt before they began creating their spectacular home and surrounding property. They have formed a wonderful partnership of love and respect\, as Lynn is the winemaker\, while Mike makes the olive oils\, which are milled within a few hours of the olives being hand-harvested. \nTheir determination to help the environment has led Peppertree Canyon to be a one-of-a-kind\, fully sustainable property that boasts over 50 fruit trees\, including fig\, pomegranate\, persimmon\, plum\, pluot\, apricot\, nectarine\, cherry\, apple\, mango\, kiwi\, and avocado\, along with over 20 citrus trees of every varietal one can imagine. \nThey also have a seasonal herb and vegetable garden\, as well as an assortment of berries. Lynn and I spoke of the bees that inhabit the property and their honey making endeavors which currently produces only enough annually for their family and friends. She and Mike are so environmentally conscientious that when the beehives infringe on an area of the property unacceptable to them\, they relocate the hives to other areas of the property. Lynn has also designed and built their own reservoir that collects rainwater and run off from neighboring properties\, which irrigates their property and keeps the use of public water to a minimum and used only when absolutely necessary. \nLynn is most proud of their authenticity\, with their wine being 100% OC grown onsite. They only make one wine\, a predominantly Sangiovese blend (90% Sangiovese\, 5% Petite Syrah\, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) from biodynamically farmed grapes they planted and nurture. \nIf I wrote everything I learned from Lynn and every aspect of Peppertree Canyon that impressed me\, this article would take up this entire edition of The Wine Press. Suffice it to say\, I highly recommend attending the OCWS Winemakers’ Group webinar featuring Lynn on Saturday\, May 22 at 3 pm and experiencing Lynn’s passion and commitment for yourself. In the meantime\, check out their website at peppertreecanyon.com. It’s fabulous and will give you an idea of the incredibly informative and fun webinar to come. \nTheir wine club is private\, as Peppertree Canyon is not open to the public. I\, personally\, consider their club worth the price of admission to enjoy Lynn’s annual production\, their olive oil\, and their welcoming hospitality at pick up parties at Peppertree Canyon (when allowed again in a non-COVID environment\, which they can’t wait to happen). \nThe wine that will be featured during the webinar and their olive oil can be purchased from Peppertree Canyon directly at info@peppertreecanyon.com or by calling 949.205-9608. \n– Fran Gitsham\, Contributing Writer

SUMMARY:OCWS Winery Webinar Program—Jeff Runquist Wines
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Runquist has a passion for red wines. His goal in winemaking is: “work very hard to produce balanced wines…wines that will age and become more complex with time\, but wines that can also be enjoyed in their youth.” \nJeff’s wines are characterized by a fruit forward nature in both the aroma and flavor that provides a good representation of the grape used to make the wine. This is followed by a depth\, richness\, and complexity that is enhanced by aging in small oak barrels. The wines finish with a smooth aftertaste where the tannins are soft and mature. As a winemaker\, Jeff works to pack as much flavor and character into a wine as possible without stepping over the line and making a wine so tannic that aging is required to balance and round out the wine. \nInstead of growing his own grapes\, Jeff finds the finest growers growing the right varieties in the best locations and partners with them to provide him with fruit. This enables him the ability to produce wines with a wide variety of flavors and textures from throughout California. \nJeff does not make wine with the expectation that the consumer is going to age it to maximize its enjoyment. Over the past three decades\, he has developed and refined winemaking techniques and protocols to provide a rich\, full flavor without the burden of chalky\, astringent tannins. One of the advantages of managing the tannins in the wine is that they can carry a bit more fruit acid\, and it is this additional acid that helps the wine hold its fruit flavors as it ages. \nWine Ordering Offer: You have the option to order the wines. Proceed to the Jeff Runquist website at  jeffrunquistwines.com. Click on “Wines” and select the three wines for this webinar. These wines will cost $89\,  tax and shipping will be added. The wines to order include: \n2019 Barbera\, Dick Cooper Vineyards\, Amador \n2019 Tempranillo\, Liberty Oaks Vineyard\, Lodi \n2019 Petite Sirah\, Salman Vineyards\, Clarksburg \nMembers have to sign-up for this virtual webinar on our website to watch via Zoom. SUMMARY:Winery Webinar Program—Russian River Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Russian River Vineyards winemaker\, Giovanni “Gio” Balistreri\, will be our featured speaker. He comes from four generations of farmers\, and he would not have it any other way. Gio is a farmer\, first and foremost. \nTo produce great wine\, Gio believes that you must first produce excellent fruit. And it is the essential character and flavor of that fruit\, when it is harvested\, that will determine its potential to become a superior wine. There is no shortcut. You must be there and manage the crop at every step. \nThe Russian River Valley is one of the world’s greatest winemaking regions where true devotees of great wine are familiar with the magic of this valley. So\, just over a decade ago\, he set out to make the most of an incredible environment to make great wine. The Russian River area enjoys warm summer days\, which are important for sugar production in grapes\, and cool night temperatures to preserve the acidity in the grapes. This provides a combination to achieve and maintain the delicate balance of sugar and acid. These attributes\, combined with rich and diverse soil conditions\, make the Russian River Valley a winemaker’s dream for Gio to work his magic. \nWine Ordering Offer: You have the option to order the wines at a 30% discount; tax and shipping fee will be added. This wine sale period extends from March 1 to April 12. \nClick to order Russian River Wines \nThe wines to order ($100 for all three) for the webinar include: \n2019 Chardonnay / Bacigalupi Vineyard \n2017 Pinot Noir / Classic Cuvee \n2016 Red Blend / Confluence \nNOTE: you must sign up separately on the website to attend this webinar on Zoom. SUMMARY:Winery Webinar - Mineral Wines
DESCRIPTION:Our OCWS Winery Webinar for February features Brett Keller from Mineral Wines. \nCombining his passion for minerals with that of wine\, Mineral Wines was founded in 2009 by the Henkel and Keller families\, who grow grapes at the Cherokee Creek Vineyard in Angels Camp. Brett has been making wine in Calaveras County since 2003 and grapes are sourced from their Estate Vineyard which was first planted in 1993 and from various other vineyards\nin Calaveras County. \nBrett studied mining engineering and later viticulture and enology at Fresno State. He fell in love with wine and his wife\, Andrea\, in her hometown of Angels Camp\, the Land of Mark Twain. Brett and his daughter started collecting crystals outside their driveway at the famous Carson Hill Mine. They were awarded Best of Show in Tucson in 2012 and again in 2014\nfor their vivid displays of bentonite. \nEach of their wine varietal labels highlights minerals from their collection\, captured in watercolor by renowned artist\, Frederick Wilda. Besides  collecting award winning minerals\, Mineral Wines has collected nine Gold medals and 15 Silver medals in our last three OCWS competitions. Mineral Wines was going to be one of our Featured Wineries at the OC Fair (cancelled last summer)\, so we are pleased to invite them. \nBrett is offering the OCWS three Bordeaux wines for tasting at a 15% discount and half price for shipping\, which will be reflected in your order at checkout. His discussion includes “Crafting Delicious Meritage Wines” and will also include literature and recipes for finger foods. Log in to Mineralwines.com and use Promo Code OCWS20 at checkout. \n2016 Meritage $32\n2016 Merlot $28\n2017 Cabernet Franc $32 \nMembers will have to sign up on our website for the Mineral Wines Winery Webinar to watch via Zoom. SUMMARY:Winery Webinar-Rock Wall Wine Company
DESCRIPTION:We will start the New Year with one of our favorite winemakers\, Shauna Rosenblum. Her Rock Wall Wine Company\, located in the San Francisco East Bay on the decommissioned Alameda Naval Air Base\, produces great wines from grapes taken from the right place as a result of many long-term relationships with acclaimed vineyard owners. \nShauna follows what her late father\, Kent Rosenblum\, started by sourcing grapes from all over California to create a diverse winemaking environment with different styles\, varieties and regional flavor profiles. \nThe spectacular views at Rock Wall are of the San Francisco skyline. But\, their most important feature is being centrally located. Because of this\, they are able to bring Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley\, Zinfandel from Sonoma County\, Petite Sirah from Contra Costa County or Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands and start processing the grapes very shortly after they are picked. \nMembers have to sign-up for this Winery Webinar on our website to watch via Zoom. Sign-ups close Wednesday\, January 20 at 5 pm. After you sign-up to attend\, you will receive a confirmation email by Thursday at Noon\, January 21\, with details to connect. SUMMARY:Winter Seminar Series -Sparkling & Sweets: A Fun and Long-Awaited Farewell to 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Seminar Committee is here to present you with what we think is a selection of unique and interesting December Winter Seminars\, brought to you by passionate and knowledgeable presenters! \nWe share your excitement in returning on Sundays at 3 pm beginning on December 6. Our Winter Seminar Series runs through February 28\, 2021. \nSign-ups for these seminars will be through the OCWS website. Sign-ups\, if not completely filled sooner\, will be closed the Friday prior to each seminar. Zoom links to attendees will be then emailed the Saturday prior to the event. \nOur December lineup is as follows: \n\nDecember 6: Lesser Known Wine Regions of California presented by Carolyn Christian\nDecember 13: Truths & Myths about Cheese along with Cheese & Wine Pairings for the Holidays presented by Dawn Iglesias\nDecember 20: Terroir\, Seasons & Effects of Smoke on the Vineyard presented by Kevin Donnelly\nDecember 27: Sparkling & Sweets: A Fun and Long-Awaited Farewell to 2020 presented by Fran Gitsham & Sara Yeoman\n\nIf you have any questions whatsoever\, please contact us at Seminars@ocws.org. Happy Holidays from the Seminar Committee. \n– Sara Yeoman\, Seminar Committee ChairAttendee – \nWho is Willie Gluckstern? \nWhile creating the seminar to be presented on Sunday\, December 27 at 3 pm\, which is mainly based around the celebratory beverage\, Champagne\, and dessert pairings\, we came across many famous quotes from notables like Dom Perignon\, Winston Churchill\, Bette Davis and Coco Chanel\, but the one that caught our eye goes like this: “In a perfect world\, everyone would have a glass of Champagne every evening.” This quote is attributed to one Willie Gluckstern\, a forty-plus year veteran of the NYC wine business. We thought to ourselves\, “who the hell is Willie Gluckstern?\,” but in the long run\, it really didn’t matter a wit to us. It just mattered that we love Champagne and its many iterations so much that\, in our perfect world\, we would have a glass (or more) every day\, so thank you Willie and drink on. \nThis virtual gathering was born of our love of the bubbly beverage\, which we want to share with you (along with what very minute actual knowledge we have) and some little known facts and fiction surrounding Champagne\, the drink of choice for many a celebration. While sipping sparkling (provided to you by you\, of course) and looking forward to ringing in the much anticipated and awaited New Year (we don’t think anyone will be sorry to see 2020 be a thing of the past)\, we are hopeful to share laughs and loving memories of better pre-COVID times and making new memories to carry us into 2021. We would love for you to come spend an hour with us just for the fun of it and\, if you are so inclined\, to offer up a story or favorite dessert pairing. If you’ll share with us\, please send an email to Fran@ocws.org and we’ll do our best to share with all during the seminar. \nSign-ups are open on the OCWS website\, but space is limited\, so sign up early. Sign-ups\, if not full sooner\, will close the Wednesday prior to the virtual event. Your Zoom attendance link will be sent to you via email on Thursday\, December 24. \n– Sara Yeoman\, Seminar Committee Chair \n– Fran Gitsham\, Seminar Co-presenter

SUMMARY:Winery Webinar: Bushong Vintage Company
DESCRIPTION:The Orange County Wine Society is immensely proud to welcome Jason Bushong\, proprietor and winemaker of Bushong Vintage Company\, as our Winery Webinar presenter this month. A veteran judge of the OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition and Featured Winery presenter at the OC Fair\, Bushong Vintage Company has consistently been awarded Best of Class\, Double Gold\, and Gold medals. Most recently taking a Double Gold and Best of Class at the 2019 Competition for his 2017 Power\, Corruption\, and Lies\, a Rhone varietal blend. You can check out Bushong’s nine awards garnered at the 2019 Commercial Wine Competition on our WineCompetition.com website. \nBushong Vintage Company was born from Jason’s lifelong passion of winemaking which began as a teenager in Riverside after tasting a bottle of Santa Barbara County Chardonnay. He has now been crafting superior wines from the Central Coast region for over 20 years\, with a focus on unique varietal blocks from vineyards that yield supreme\, quality fruit. His style reflects his winemaking philosophy that wine is the unique culmination of science\, agriculture and art often resulting in crisp\, bright whites\, and rich\, bold reds. \nJason’s passion for wine is only further enriched by his passion for music and art. His tasting room in downtown Paso Robles features an old Star Wars pinball machine and a large collection of vinyl records that tasters are welcome to play and is a must visit when wine tasting in the Paso area. His passion for art is also reflected in his outstanding label art. \nThe wines being highlighted this month are Bushong’s 2018 Ananda (100% Pinot Noir)\, their Institutionalized Red Blend (40% Petite Sirah\, 20% Tannat\, 20% Syrah\, 20% Grenache)\, and the 2018 Power\, Corruption\, and Lies (67% Tannat\, 27% Syrah\, 6% Petite Sirah). \nAlthough it is not required to attend the program (but a definite enhancement to the experience)\, you have the option to order the three wines which Jason will be presenting at a special 50% discounted rate. Included in your purchase along with three full 750 ml bottles\, Jason is including 4 oz. sample bottles of all three wines which you can use to taste and follow along during the Zoom program. To purchase\, order “The OCWS Virtual Event Kit” online at Bushongvintagecompany.com and Use Promotion Code: OCWS20 at checkout. \nPlease note that purchase of the wines does not automatically sign you up for the Zoom program\, so sign up soon on the OCWS website\, as space is limited. For further information regarding receipt of the Zoom link once you have reserved your space\, see the article Where’s My Zoom Link to the Virtual Winery Program? in this edition of The Wine Press and\, if you have any questions\, email Rich@ocws.org. \n– Leslie Hodowanec\, Director\n– Rich Skoczylas\, Director & Winery Program Chair
