SUMMARY:Varietal Hour - Wines with a Cause
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the last two Varietal Hours of the season! These Zoom meetings are a great way to share knowledge and fun stories about wine. Regardless of where you are on your wine enthusiast journey\, you will definitely learn something new each time we meet. \nEvery other Monday from 7 -8 p.m.\, a fun-loving group of OCWS members meet via Zoom to discuss wines with a particular theme. Pick a bottle that you already have in your cellar or use the Varietal Hours as an opportunity to go to your favorite wine store to buy something new. Each participant shares what they like — or didn’t like — about their wine(s) and some great stories related to the week’s theme. \nAlthough the event is FREE to OCWS members\, sign-ups are required. Please logon to the OCWS website to register for this event no later than the Sunday night before the Varietal Hour. Couples only need to sign up for one person since this event is via Zoom.  A link for the Zoom meeting will be emailed to you on the day of the event. You can attend as many or as few of the Varietal Hours as you wish. \nNote that we will be going dark during the OC Fair and meeting once again starting in August. We are looking for themes and hosts for the Varietal Hours scheduled August to December. DESCRIPTION:As we have anticipated to be the case\, the 2020 OCWS Annual Business Meeting will take place in a virtual Zoom platform this year. The Annual Business Meeting will take place on Friday\, September 11\, beginning promptly at 7 pm and lasting approximately one hour. There is no limitation on the number of members who may attend; however\, the meeting is strictly for members only. Sign-up for the Annual Business Meeting will be available through the OCWS website or by “email invitation” utilizing Constant Contact. To accommodate all OCWS members\, please remember sign-ups should be limited to a single household. \nThis is the most important member meeting of the OCWS year. The Agenda will offer an overview of the year’s activities\, the financial summary of the 2019/2020 Board year\, and looking ahead in these unprecedented times. \nSpeakers scheduled to present will be: Bill Redding\, President; Mel Jay\, Treasurer; Charles English\, OCWS Accountant; Kevin Donnelly\, Winemakers’ Group Chair; and Greg Hagadorn\, 2020 Election Chair. \nAfter the presentation\, Greg will introduce the individuals who have declared their Board candidacy. Each candidate will have a brief opportunity to introduce themselves and present their interests and objectives for the next Board term – 2020-2023. \nMember attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions through the “chat” option on the Zoom platform. The OCWS Winemakers’ Group is venturing into new territory by offering our Kit Wine Class virtually over Zoom video conferencing! \nInstructor Karyl Newton will run the class every Saturday morning for an hour\, starting at 10:00 from July 11 through August 8. She will move through all the steps of making wine from a kit\, from opening the box all the way to corking your bottles. \nYOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN WINE AT YOUR HOME\, RIGHT ALONG WITH US! \nYou can purchase your own Kit Wine for $90\, equipment for $140\, and bottles for $51 (or re-use your own). Karyl will demonstrate each step and answer your questions at the end of each session. \nYou’ll end up with 30 bottles of your own homemade wine. \nYou also have the option to just “audit” the class without making your own wine. \nWe will recommend which kit you can start with\, choosing from Cabernet Sauvignon\, Malbec\, Shiraz\, Merlot\, Chardonnay\, Viognier or Riesling. \nTimeline: \n\n\n\n\nJuly 11\nSanitation\, Open Box\, Pitch Juice into Bucket\, add initial ingredients\n\n\nJuly 18\nCheck brix\, see if Fermentation is complete. Rack wine into Carboy. Add ingredients\n\n\nJuly 25\nCheck point\, answer questions\n\n\nAugust 1\nWine should be clear. Check point\, answer questions\n\n\nAugust 8\nRack wine back into Bucket. Sanitize Bottles. Bottle Wine\n\n\n\nIf you want to learn how to make your own wine\, this is a great place to start! After you make your first batch\, you only need to purchase another kit wine\, bottles and corks. Re-use your equipment\, and you can make another 30 bottles of your own\, personalized wines.
