SUMMARY:Pinot Noir Mini Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Many consider Pinot Noir the “holy grail” of wine. This temperamental grape varietal requires warm daytime and cool evening temperatures and is partial to coastal climates. The Burgundy region of France’s Cote-d’Or region is well known for Pinot Noir where only Chardonnay is planted in greater abundance. In California\, plantings began in the 1940s with a significant push in Sonoma starting in the 1960s. Today\, high-quality Pinots are produced in Sonoma\, Mendocino and Santa Barbara counties of California\, as well as in Oregon and Washington. \nWhile Pinot Noir is quite well known as a red wine\, it has three close cousins that are also interesting.  Pinot Grigio/Gris is a very popular white wine. Pinot Blanc is less well known but is an excellent white wine. Pinot Noir is genetically unstable and occasionally a vine will have one or more canes that produce white (Pinot Blanc) grapes. Finally\, Pinot Meunier is one of the three main grape varieties used in Champagne (along with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). \nPinot Noir has great variation. One of the major factors affecting Pinot Noir is the amount of time spent in oak. From France\, Pinot Noir is rustic\, earthy and acidic. From Sonoma\, it’s lush with rich black cherry flavors and higher in alcohol than French Pinot Noir. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please e-mail George Cravens (george@ocws.org). You may need to sign up and pay until hosts are selected. Reimbursement will be made for all host sites. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request; however\, your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $35 for members and $40 for guests. \nDish: Each person/couple attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish or dessert) to serve a small portion to 18 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting\, in this case Pinot Noir. Please coordinate your food selection with your host site to ensure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning a maximum of eight sites for this Mini-Tasting so the limit is 112 attendees (plus hosts).  Mini-Tastings tend to be popular\, so we encourage you to sign-up early. The cut-off date for online sign-up is Friday\, April 21. After this date\, please contact the OCWS office to determine availability. The cancellation deadline is Monday\, April 24. \nBon Appetit\, \nGeorge Cravens

SUMMARY:Rhone Mini-Tasting
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:  The date for the Rhone Wine mini-tasting has changed due to an unforeseen conflict that arose after the January issue of the Winepress was completed and the event had been posted on the OCWS Website.  The Mini-tasting has been rescheduled to Saturday March 4\, 2023. \nFor the upcoming mini-tasting\, we plan to showcase one Rhone white followed by four Rhone red wines. The Rhone region in France has been producing wines since pre-Roman times. \nThe mini-tasting plans to explore a number of the popular varietals and blends the region is known for as well as comparing California wines to similar French wines. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request (please add a note on your signup if there is a specific location you would like\, or a group of people you want to attend with). Your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $35 for members and $40 for guests. \nDish: Each person attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 16 people. Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly. If the sign-ups are full on the website\, please call the office to be put on a waiting list. \nDue to the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund after the cancellation deadline. SUMMARY:February Winemakers Quarterly Meeting\, Potluck\, SO2 Testing
DESCRIPTION:Signups are now open on the OCWS website for the next Winemakers Group quarterly meeting and potluck.  It will be held on Saturday\, February 25\, 1:00pm to 5:00pm.  We will also have a short meeting to review our programs for the year and announce upcoming events.  Cost to attend is $5 per person to cover supplies.  All OCWS members are welcome\, you don’t need to be a winemaker to attend. \nThe La Habra-area meeting location will be announced approximately 1 week prior to the event.  Due to limited parking at the host site\, attendees are asked to carpool.  There is a nearby park with ample parking where people can meet up and carpool.  Parking details will be provided when the meeting location is announced. \nEach attendee\, or couple\, is asked to bring a potluck dish (appetizer\, salad\, side dish\, or dessert) ready to serve a small portion to 8 people.  Please bring any serving utensils necessary for your dish and a bottle of wine per person (homemade or commercial) to share.  Plates\, napkins and tableware will be furnished.  New winemakers\, this is an excellent opportunity to see what our group is all about and sample some of the great wines we produce. \nWinemakers\, did you get grapes last Autumn or are you processing wines from earlier vintages?  Make sure they stay protected from wine-damaging organisms.  Our SO2 testing team led by Mike Paz will be conducting tests for your wines from 10:00am to noon on the same day and location prior to the potluck meeting.  This continues to be a very important service we do for the group as winemakers need to know how much sulfite to periodically add to the wines for protection against unwanted bacteria and yeast. \nTesting fee is $5 per sample.  Bring a 100ml sample of each wine\, enough to test twice in case the test needs to be repeated.  Please email Mike by February 17th at Michael.winemaker@icloud.com with the number of tests needed and the types of varietals to be tested.  It is important that we know ahead of time how many tests will be done so we can purchase enough supplies prior and have them on hand. \nWe will need some volunteers to help set up prior to and help clean up after the event.  We will also need someone to help with parking control/direction prior to the meeting.  Contact Ed Reyes ed@ocws.org if you can help. \nRemember\, attendance at this event is limited so sign up now!

SUMMARY:Holiday Wines & Comfort Foods Mini-Tasting
DESCRIPTION:With the holiday season fast approaching\, there will be ample opportunities to enjoy wines that complement comfort food often enjoyed over the holidays. The December Mini-Tasting will feature a range of Red wines that pair well with these foods. The guests will rate the wines tasted blind in pairs\, and then discuss their ratings. Overall ratings from each site will be published in the wrap-up article. \nThis Mini-Tasting will feature somewhat higher-end wines\, so the cost has increased by $5 to cover the costs. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please e-mail George Cravens at George@ocws.org or call him at 949-510-5318. \nMini Overview: Each person/couple attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) ready to serve a small portion to 16 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting. Please coordinate your food selection with your host site to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. The attendees will vote on Chef of the Evening\, and a special bottle of wine will be awarded to the winner of the vote. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. Please plan on arriving promptly at 6 pm so the event can get started on time. You are invited to bring your own wine glasses for tasting\, keep in mind the wines are served in flights of two. \nWe are planning a maximum of seven sites for this mini-tasting\, so the limit is 98 attendees (plus hosts). Due to the high popularity of our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly. The cut-off date for online sign-up is Monday\, November 21. After this date\, or if the website says no tickets are available\, please contact the OCWS office to be added to the waiting list. If the event fills up quickly\, we will look into adding additional sites and expanding the number of available tickets. The cancellation deadline is Monday\, November 28 for a refund. After that date\, due to the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund unless there is a waiting list. \n– Bon Appétit\, George Cravens

SUMMARY:Syrah/Petite Sirah Mini-Tasting
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t had a Syrah/Petite Sirah Mini-Tasting for quite some time. These two grapes are known for creating very interesting\, food-worthy wines which should pair well with holiday comfort food. \nWhile Petite Sirah is not nearly as widely planted as Syrah\, there are a number of very good examples available\, especially from California. Syrah originated in the Rhone Valley of France\, but is widely planted in Australia and California. We plan to offer examples from different regions to compare. \nThis event may sell out\, so please sign up early!  NOTE:  If you are interested in hosting please contact George Cravens at George@ocws.org. We will keep the sites a bit smaller than in past years\, with 14 guests plus the hosts. \nIf you’d like to request a specific host site or to carpool with another member\, please add a comment on your sign-up. \nNOTE. Per OCWS policy\, all attendees must either have proof of COVID vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the event. \nLOCATIONS. Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request; however\, your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. \nCOST. The cost to attend the tasting is $30 for members and $35 for guests. \nDISH. Each person/couple attending will sign up with their host to bring a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 16 people.  There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipes published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning a maximum of eight sites for this Mini-Tasting. Sign-ups will open on Monday\, January 3. Once sign-ups fill up\, please call the OCWS office to be added to the waiting list. \nThe cut-off date for online sign-up is Friday\, March 11\, 2022. After this date please contact the OCWS office to determine availability. Due to the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund if you cancel after the cancellation deadline\, which is Tuesday\, March 15\, 2022. \n– Bon Appetit\, George Cravens

SUMMARY:Winemakers' Group SO2 Testing
DESCRIPTION:Please fill out all of the fields within Attendee 1 so we can send you the location drop off details and the results from your wine test.\nSulfites are a VERY important additive for making wine. They protect your wines against bacteria and oxidation\, and we recommend you keep watch on your SO2 levels. \nThis Covid-19 Self-Quarantine has been hard on all of us\, including our Winemakers’ Group. We can’t conduct our Quarter Meetings now\, but we still want to keep our wines in tip-top shape! To help everyone out\, David Rutledge and Jerry Guerin will be conducting SO2 testing on August 15th. \nYou will need 100ml per wine\, and you will drop your samples at David Rutledge’s house in Irvine on Saturday morning\, August 15th. David and Jerry will conduct the SO2 tests and contact you with results. You will be able to pick up your empty containers in the afternoon. \nThe cost is $4 per test to cover the cost of the chemicals. Since we will not be meeting face-to-face\, we are asking members to log onto the OCWS website and pay online in advance. \nOnce you make your payment\, you will be contacted with your confirmation and specific information about when and where to drop off your wines. \nKevin Donnelly

SUMMARY:Mini-Tasting: Rhone Wines
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled and refunds will be submitted to all members who signed up.  \nWe will review the situation in a couple of weeks and if the event needs to be cancelled\, we will issue refunds to those who have already signed up. If we end up rescheduling\, we will contact those that have signed up to see if they would prefer a refund. \nThank you for understanding. \nThe Rhone Valley is known for a wide range of white and red wines.  The whites are frequently aromatic blends with varietals including Viognier\, Marsanne\, Roussanne\, and Grenache Blanc. Many of the reds are well-known either as single-varietals Syrah\, Grenache\, and Morvedre\, among others\, or as blends like GSM. For this event\, we will feature Old-World (French) wines side-by-side with New World (California). As usual\, it will be a blind tasting with five flights of two\, one white flight and four red flights.  One of the challenges will be to identify which wines are from California and which are from France. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please email me at George@ocws.com. You may need to sign up and pay until host sites are selected. Reimbursement will be made for all host sites. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event.  We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your spe cific site request (please add a note on your signup if there is a specific location you would like\, or a group of people you want to attend with). Your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $30 for members and $35 for guests. \nDish: Each couple attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 18 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting. Please coordinate your food selection with your host to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine awarded as a prize for Chef of the Evening voted by the guests at each site. Our winning Chefs of the Evening will be named in the wrap-up newsletter article. \nWe are planning for seven sites for this Mini-Tasting so the limit is 112 attendees (plus hosts). Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly. If the sign-ups are full on the website\, please call the office to be put on a waiting list. If we have sufficient interest\, we will expand the number of sites. Sign-ups on the OCWS website will open on Friday\, March 20. \nDue to the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund if you have to cancel after the cancellation date. The cut-off date for online sign-up is Monday\, April 20. After this date\, please contact the OCWS office to determine availability. The cancellation deadline is Friday\, April 24. \n– Bon Appétit\, George Cravens

SUMMARY:Winemakers' Winter Quarterly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next Winemakers’ Quarterly Meeting will be held in Silverado Canyon\, a very skinny curvy road up the canyon with very limited parking.  For this reason\, we are requiring carpools of 4 people minimum per vehicle.  While signing up\, be prepared to answer: who you will be carpooling with\, who is the Designated Driver (Non-Drinking) and who are the passengers.  If you have no selections for these\, we will help by assigning you to a car.  The address to the event will be given after all carpools are defined.\n\nAs usual\, this event is a POTLUCK. Please bring a food item big enough to serve 8-12 people (one item per single or couple)\, and a bottle of wine (homemade or commercial) per person. We recommend bringing your own wine glass(es).\nSULFITE WINE TESTING: Also because of the limited space on the 29th\, we are going to do our Sulfite Testing on a different day\, February 22nd in Irvine.  Sulfites are a VERY important additive for winemakers. They protect your wines against bacteria and oxidation\, and we recommend you keep watch on your SO2 levels. If you want to test your wine(s) for SO2\, please contact Jerry Guerin at 6428682jerry@att.net and let him know how many samples you will bring. The cost is $4 per test to cover the cost of the chemicals\, and we will be testing between 11:00 and 12:30. \nI look forward to seeing you at the Quarterly Meeting on February 29th! Call me if you have questions. \nKevin Donnelly\, 714-457-7229\, kevindonnelly@ocws.org

SUMMARY:Mini-Tasting: Pinot Noir
DESCRIPTION:Pinot Noir is the wine considered by many to be the “holy grail” of wine. This temperamental grape varietal requires warm daytime and cool evening temperatures and is partial to coastal climates. The Burgundy region of France’s Cote d’Or is well known for Pinot Noir where only Chardonnay is planted in greater abundance. In California\, plantings began in the 1940s with a significant push in Sonoma starting in the 1960s. Today\, high quality Pinots are produced in Sonoma\, Mendocino and Santa Barbara counties of California\, as well as in Oregon and Washington. \nPinot Noir has great variation. One of the major factors affecting Pinot Noir is the amount of time spent in oak. From France\, Pinot Noir is rustic\, earthy\, and acidic. From Sonoma\, it’s lush with rich black cherry flavors and higher in alcohol than French Pinot Noir. \nPinot noir is a versatile wine. Lighter\, fruitier wines pair well with salmon\, fatty fish and pasta\, or roasted chicken. The bigger\, more tannic Pinots pair well with duck\, game birds\, and stews such as beef bourguignon. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please email George Cravens at George@ocws.org. You may need to sign up and pay until host sites are selected. Reimbursement will be made for all host sites. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting\, in this case Pinot Noir. Please coordinate your food selection with your host to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine awarded that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning a maximum of seven sites for this Mini-Tasting so the limit is 112 attendees\, plus hosts. SUMMARY:Winemakers' Summer 2019 - Quarterly Meeting & Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Our next Winemakers’ Quarterly Meeting will be held on June 30th\, and will be by RSVP only! The cost will be $5 per person. The capacity at this location is limited\, so be sure to sign up right away. \nRemember that this event is a POTLUCK. Please bring an item big enough to serve 8-12 people (one item per single or couple)\, and a bottle of wine (homemade or commercial) per person. \nWINE TESTING: Sulfites are a VERY important additive for winemakers. Sulfites protect your wines against bacteria and oxidation\, and we recommend you all keep watch on your SO2 levels. \nIf you want to test your wine(s) for SO2\, please contact Jerry Guerin at 6428682jerry@att.net and let him know how many samples you will bring. The cost is $4 per test to cover the cost of the chemicals\, and we will be testing between 11:00 and 12:30. \nThank you all\, and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday! Call me if you have questions. \nKevin Donnelly \nkevindonnelly@ocws.org

SUMMARY:Rhone Mini-Tasting (Member’s Choice)
DESCRIPTION:For the upcoming Mini-tasting\, we asked the participants in the last Mini to suggest themes.  We received a number of very good suggestions\, with the most common (by a narrow margin) being Rhone wines.  Since we also received suggestions for Rhone vs. Italian and New world vs. Old world\, we’ll combine a few of the ideas for an interesting Mini-tasting. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request (please add a note on your signup if there is a specific location you would like\, or a group of people you want to attend with).  Your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office.  The cost to attend the tasting is $30 for members and $35 for guests. \nDish: Each person attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 18 people.  The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting.  Please coordinate your food selection with your host site to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening.  There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening.  Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning a maximum of six sites for this mini-tasting so the limit is 96 attendees (plus hosts).  Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly.  If the sign-ups are full on the website\, please call the office to be put on a waiting list.  If we have sufficient interest\, we will expand the number of sites. \nDue the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund if you cannot attend.  The cut-off date for online sign-up is Monday\, April 15th.  After this date\, please contact the OCWS office to determine availability.  The cancellation deadline is Friday April 19th\, 2019. \nBon Appetit\, George Cravens

SUMMARY:Pinot Noir Mini-Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Pinot Noir is the wine considered by many to be the “holy grail” of wine. This temperamental grape varietal requires warm daytime and cool evening temperatures and is partial to coastal climates. The Burgundy region of France’s Cote d’Or region is well known for Pinot Noir where only Chardonnay is planted in greater abundance. In California\, plantings began in the 1940s with a significant push in Sonoma starting in the 1960s. Today high quality Pinots are produced in Sonoma\, Mendocino and Santa Barbara Counties of California\, as well as in Oregon and Washington. \nPinot Noir is a versatile wine. Lighter\, fruitier wines pair well with salmon\, fatty fish\, pasta\, or roasted chicken. The bigger\, more tannic Pinots pair well with duck\, game birds\, and stews such as Beef Bourguignon. \nHosts. Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please email George Cravens at George@ocws.com. You may need to sign up and pay until hosts are selected. Each person attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 18 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting\, in this case Pinot Noir. Please coordinate your food selection with your host to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine awarded that evening to the Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nCost. Please coordinate your food selection with your host to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine awarded that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. Please plan on arriving promptly at 6:00 p.m. You are invited to bring your own wine glasses for tasting\, keeping in mind the wines are served in flights of two. \nCost: The cost to attend the Mini-Tasting is $30 for members and $35 for guests. \nWe are planning a maximum of five sites for this Mini-Tasting\, so the limit is 90 attendees. Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign up early\, as sites tend to fill quickly. The cut-off date for online sign up is Sunday\, November 5. After this date\, please contact Bill or the OCWS office to determine availability. The cancellation deadline is Friday\, November 3\, for a refund. After that date\, due to the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund unless there is a waiting list. \n– Bon Appétit\, Bill Redding and George Cravens \n
