SUMMARY:Rose´ Winemaking Class
DESCRIPTION:The OCWS Winemakers Group will be presenting a rose’ winemaking class on Saturday\, August 22 in Laguna Hills.  Ed Reyes\, Chairman of the Winemakers Group will be teaching the class.  Ed has been making rose’ wines for many years and has won medals at the OC Fair Home Wine Competition for his rose’ wines made from varietals such as Tempranillo\, Sangiovese\, Syrah and Primitivo. \nRose´ wines have long been popular in Europe and are becoming more popular here in the U.S.  They are excellent to enjoy in the summer and they pair well with lighter summertime foods too. \nThis class will benefit wine afficionados and winemakers of all skill levels.  All Wine Society members are welcome to attend.  Not sure if winemaking is for you?  This class will give you an understanding of the winemaking process to better appreciate what it takes to produce a glass of fine wine. \nAspiring winemakers attending the class will learn basic winemaking skills and the basic equipment needed to make a rose´ wine. \nExperienced winemakers will learn that making rose´ involves using a combination of both red and white winemaking techniques.  As an added bonus\, if you’re already making wine\, then you already have all the equipment needed to make a rose’.  All winemakers will also appreciate the quick turnaround time as a rose´ wine started in the fall will be ready to enjoy the next summer. \nThe class will last roughly 4 hours.  There will be a short break with snacks served.  We will also taste a variety of rose’ wines to better understand how grape varietals affect color and flavor.  Everyone attending the class will learn: \n\nHow a rose´ wine differs from its red wine counterpart\nVariables that affect the color and flavor of rose´ wines\nDifferences in processing red wines vs rose´ wines\nHow rose´ wines can be made from any red grape\n\nCost for OCWS members to attend the class is $25.  Members can purchase a ticket for a non-member for $30.  Detailed event information and location will be sent to attendees approximately one week prior to the event. \nDon’t miss this fun and unique educational opportunity!  Sign up today on the OCWS website. \nThe OC Fair Home Wine Competition now features a Best of Show award for rose´ wine.  Winemakers\, if you want to compete in this new category for one of the top competition awards\, then you need to attend this class.  Who knows\, maybe your wine will be next year’s Best of Show rose´ winner! \nEd Reyes\ned@ocws.org

SUMMARY:Learn the Basics of Making Kit Wines
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever wanted to learn winemaking\, here’s your chance. John Lane from our Winemakers Group will be conducting a Kit Winemaking Class on Saturday\, June 28 at Ed Reyes’s home in Laguna Hills. This is a great beginner’s class. All OCWS members are welcome to attend. \nA wine kit contains most everything you need to make a batch of wine: grape concentrate\, additives\, oak\, basic equipment and instructions. It’s like following a recipe and having all the ingredients\, only you’ll make wine instead of a meal. A kit can produce two to three cases of wine\, ready to enjoy in about three months. It’s a fun and easy way to get started. You only need an area about the size of a large coat closet to make it happen. \nFor aspiring winemakers\, this class will teach you the basic skills you’ll need to make wine. Kits are a great springboard to making wine from grapes. Not sure if winemaking is for you? This class will give you an understanding of the winemaking process to better appreciate what it takes to produce a glass of wine. \nSince our first kit winemaking class more than 12 years ago\, over 200 OCWS members have taken part. Many of our new winemakers started from these introductory classes. Using kits\, many members have produced medal-winning wines at the OC Fair Home Wine Competition. \nIn this class you will learn: kit selection\, equipment needed\, space requirements\, step-by-step kit instructions\, monitoring your wine throughout the process\, racking/clarifying\, storage/aging and bottling. This is a “hands-on” class. John will take you through the process using two separate kits. You’ll start an Italian Verdicchio white wine in the first half of the class. In the second half\, you’ll finish and bottle an Italian Valpola\, a deep-colored red wine\, which you’ll get to take home. \nCost to attend is $32 and attendance is extremely limited. The class will last roughly four hours.  Coffee and breakfast muffins will be served before the class. We will have a lunch break around the halfway point. Lunch will be accompanied by wines from our Winemakers Group. \nDon’t miss this educational opportunity! Sign up now on the OCWS website to attend. Who knows\, maybe next year you’ll be entering your wines into the 50th annual OC Fair Home Wine Competition. \n—Ed Reyes\, ed@ocws.org
