SUMMARY:Winery Program - Eberle Winery
DESCRIPTION:Event Cancelled\, Refunds Will Be Processed\nThe April Winery Program presents a winemaker who was introduced to Bordeaux wines\, studied enology and earned a doctorate degree at UC Davis\, pioneered the Paso Robles Wine Appellation\, and became a star winemaker with an incredible 40+ year legacy. In 2019\, he was awarded the esteemed Robert Mondavi Hospitality Award. This month we are honored to bring you a living legend\, Gary Eberle. \nGary Eberle is considered a pioneer in the Paso Robles wine region. He landed in Paso Robles in the late 1970s with a mindset to produce Cabernet Sauvignon. Settling on 64 acres in the east side\, he released his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979 and continues through today to produce fine Cabs that exceed expectations associated with the price. \nEberle’s Cabernet Sauvignon\, Chardonnay\, Syrah\, Zinfandel wines\, and various Rhone varietals have consistently won major awards at the OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition. We will taste several of Gary’s wines this evening that made him a legend. This is one event that is definitely a must attend. \nThe evening we will feature a special sit-down\, three-course dinner. The cost is $53 for members and $58 for guests. \nMembers may bring their own wine to enjoy and share during dinner. SUMMARY:Winery Program: Fallbrook Winery
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the heart of Southern California is Fallbrook Winery. A visit to them is a short drive from Orange County where they rest between the Pacific Coast and the Pala Mesa Mountains and produce the highest quality red and white varietals. The original Fallbrook Winery opened in 1981 and was used primarily for Champagne production through the late 1980s. In the mid 1990s\, the winery started replanting with Bordeaux varietal clones including Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot\, Cabernet Franc\, Petit Verdot\, and Malbec. \nThe topography of the region creates an ideal microclimate\, with warm days\, cool nights\, hillside vineyards and decomposed granite soil. The grapes develop the optimal sugar and acid levels needed to create rich\, full-bodied and balanced wines. All red grapes are hand-picked and bin fermented to allow for optimal fermentation conditions. The manual punch downs during fermentation enhance the intensity of the fruit and permit the winemaker greater control over the winemaking process. \nWe are excited to have their Head Winemaker\, Euen Parker\, visit us for this tasting. Euen was educated in New Zealand and France and has consulted throughout Spain and the United States. He has won numerous awards at Fallbrook Winery and is a Judge in the Commercial Wine Competition. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $40 for members and $45 for guests. \nThis buffet meal includes: \nBeef Stroganoff with Buttered Noodles \nand Seasonal Baby Vegetables \nA salad of Baby Spinach Leaves with Pears\, \nToasted Walnuts & Goat Cheese \nwith Tarragon Vinaigrette \nWarm Artisan Breads and Rolls with Sweet Butter \nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $45 for members and $50 for guests. This selection includes: \nPan Roasted Local Seabass \nwith Orange Fennel Reduction \nGarbanzo Bean Mash and Seasonal Baby Vegetables \nA salad of Baby Spinach Leaves with Pears\, \nToasted Walnuts & Goat Cheese \nwith Tarragon Vinaigrette \nWarm Artisan Breads and Rolls with Sweet Butter \nSign up on the OCWS website to attend this event. Attendees can either self-park in the hotel garage and get their ticket validated at OCWS check-in or pay $10 for valet parking. Dinner begins at 6:30 pm with the meeting following about 7:15 pm. \nNew Members: If you joined after our May 2019 tasting and you attend your first Winery Program tasting in 2020\, we will gift you with a bottle of wine. \nVolunteers Needed: We need a couple of volunteers to help with check-in. SUMMARY:Winery Program - Crystal Basin Cellars
DESCRIPTION:Crystal Basin Cellars boasts the best wine production team in the Sierra Foothills who create the most flavorful wines from local fruit. They provide a winetasting experience that is one part fun\, one part information\, and a price-to-value that is second to none. They call this style of service “legendary Foothill hospitality!” \nRed wines at Crystal Basin are crafted from grapes grown within 30 miles of the winery\, in the El Dorado appellation. Growers bring the winery 15 different red grape varieties\, and they process them in their historic facility. The winery\, a 100-year-old building\, has been a pear barn\, a box manufacturing facility and an apple barn—and now it’s a grape barn! In fact\, the building was the second winery to be licensed in El Dorado County after the end of Prohibition. \nEl Dorado grapes were originally planted by the gold miners in the 1850s and 1860s. These hearty vines created a legacy that is followed today to produce the best wines that showcase the amazing flavors created by the soil\, climate and precipitation. Access to such a wide variety of grapes allows Crystal Basin to create varietal wines from individual grapes because they create the most flavorful wines from their unique\, high-altitude growing environment. \nThe cost of the buffet meal remains the same as last year and is $40 for members and $45 for guests. \nThis buffet meal includes: \n\nRoasted Chicken with Mustard\, Fresh Basil and Garlic\, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Seasonal Heirloom Baby Vegetables\nMixed Baby Greens with Sun Dried Cranberries\, Fresh Raspberries\, Goat Cheese and Glazed Walnuts\n\nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $45 for members and $50 for guests. \nThe “Heart Healthy” selection includes: \n\nGrilled Branzino on Butternut Squash Puree with Herb Salad\, Roasted Butternut and Squash Hash\nMixed Baby Greens with Sun Dried Cranberries\, Fresh Raspberries\, Goat Cheese and Glazed Walnuts\n\nSign up on the OCWS website to attend this event. SUMMARY:Winery Program: Monte de Oro Winery
DESCRIPTION:The final Winery Program this year brings to the OCWS another award winner\, Monte De Oro Winery. Their current wine selection\, with numerous awards\, reflects their goal to produce the best possible wine from grapes grown in Temecula Valley. Monte De Oro’s wines are crafted in a style to showcase the true varietal character of each grape variety\, balanced with the fruit-forward territory and subtle influences from extended barrel aging in French\, European and American oak barrels. \nWhat sets Monte De Oro apart is their careful attention to vineyard practices\, such as canopy management and controlling yields\, as well as their delicate handling of the fruit and wine throughout its time in the winery. As a result\, Monte De Oro’s signature wines are elegant\, balanced\, well-structured and integrated\, great with food or by themselves\, and approachable in their youth but having a structure to improve for years to come. When visiting Monte De Oro\, you must try their Bistro and delicious menu of foods to complement their wines (the Bistro is open Thursdays to Sundays). \nNew members who joined after May 2018 and have not yet attended one of the Winery Programs this year have a last chance to attend this event and receive a gift and free bottle of wine. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $40 for members and $45 for guests. SUMMARY:Winery Program: Red Soles Winery
DESCRIPTION:How does one come up with a winery name like “Red Soles?” Their logo gives away the answer. Years ago\, thinking of experimenting with their own fruit\, Cheryl Phillips finally convinced her husband Randy to make some wine. Not having any equipment\, the pair crushed that historic first barrel with their own feet. Following a fruitful romp in that first bin of grapes\, Randy and Cheryl stumbled upon the name “Red Soles” while admiring each other’s red\, grape-stained feet. \nToday\, Randy and Cheryl Phillips farm 100 acres of rolling hills and limestone rich soils that provide ultimate growing conditions to produce their award-winning wines and premium grapes to sell to larger wineries. SUMMARY:Winery Program: Trentadue Winery
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of Trentadue Winery in 1969 in the “remote” Alexander Valley of Sonoma County\, their goal  has been to produce affordable\, every day drinking wine without sacrificing quality. The Trentadue wines are products of that credo\, proving that excellence in grape growing and wine making do not require a hefty price tag. Winemaker Miro Tcholakov’s philosophy in a nut shell is to make the best wine possible from the grapes grown on the Trentadue Estate; with the greatest respect given to specific Terroir\, allowing every vintage and variety to express itself without restriction and intervention. \nMiro’s never ending quest is “demystifying” wine by educating and preaching the gospel of simplicity and natural affinity of wine and food to everyday life and anybody’s lifestyle. Trentadue is a special place where\, family\, terroir\, food and wine\, past and present\, take their own unique form and stay in the minds of thousands of winery visitors and loyal Trentadue fans each year. \nThe Orange County Wine Society is proud to bring Trentadue Winery and its award-winning winemaker to our members as part of our Winery Program. It is a great opportunity to taste and purchase their wines from Alexander Valley. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $40 for members and $45 for guests. SUMMARY:2019 Winery Program: Buttonwood Winery
DESCRIPTION:Buttonwood started as a farm\, then an equestrian facility\, and eventually a vineyard and winery. Its winemaker\, Karen Steinwachs\, started a career working many hours daily in high tech\, high heels\, and power suits in a high-rise tower. Karen then joined Buttonwood where she crafts old vine fruit into wines of character and distinction. \nLocated in the Los Olivos District of the Santa Ynez Valley\, Buttonwood’s mostly varietal wines are in their Artist Series. The whites are generally pressed whole cluster in stainless steel\, rosés are cold fermented\, reds are barrel fermented and aged in some new oak\, and often produced is a sweet dessert wine or a sparkler. Their Specialty Series produces small lots of “Zingy” Sauvignon Blanc\, a white Bordeaux blend\, and a flagship red Bordeaux blend. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $40 for members and $45 for guests. This buffet meal includes pan roasted Chicken with a fig demi\, wild rice pilaf\, and purple wax beans with a beet salad of baby arugula\, fresh mint\, shaved red onion and orange segments\, champagne vinaigrette. SUMMARY:Winery Program: Cottonwood Canyon Winery
DESCRIPTION:Cottonwood Canyon Vineyard & Winery is a premium boutique winery specializing in Chardonnay\, Pinot Noir and Syrah. \nCottonwood’s location is complimented by the near perfect conditions of high humidity\, low temperature wine caves\, allowing them to age wines with minimal human intervention that allows the fruit to showcase its best characteristics naturally. Winemaker Norman Beko is an artist that adopted the simple philosophy that “Mother Nature” knows best when it comes to his wines. \nChardonnay is aged in American oak from Minnesota and the French oak is from four different regions of France. The resulting objective is to add a complexity and diversity of flavors from these barrels without overpowering the benefits of each. There are three primary estate Chardonnays – the Bistro Classic Chardonnay\, the Estate Chardonnay and the Barrel Select Chardonnay. \nPinot Noir is grown with six different grape clones\, five different blocks and multiple planting densities. The grapes are hand harvested and cluster sorted in the field\, the “must” is then cold soaked in small lots. Because of the near perfect conditions of the wine caves\, there is virtually no evaporation of the wine as they age. The distinct characteristics of these elegant Cottonwood grapes show rich berry flavors\, layers of earthiness and a smoky edge making for a truly delicious Pinot Noir! \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $39 for members and $44 for guests. This buffet meal includes Chicken Scallopine in a dry sherry sauce with morels\, green peas\, asparagus\, herb risotto and a spinach salad with baby spinach leaves\, feta cheese\, marinated olives\, fresh strawberries with cucumber-lemon vinaigrette\, warm artisan bread and rolls with sweet butter. \nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $44 for members and $49 for guests. This selection includes roasted salmon with wilted spinach and mushroom sauté\, topped with baby arugula and balsamic glaze\, brown rice and a spinach salad with baby spinach leaves\, feta cheese\, marinated olives\, fresh strawberries with cucumber-lemon vinaigrette\, warm artisan bread and rolls with sweet butter. \nSign up on the OCWS website to attend this event. SUMMARY:Winery Program: Pear Valley Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Pear Valley is a family owned vineyard and winery located in Paso Robles. They focus on quality with low yields to produce intense flavors. All of the fruit is hand harvested\, immediately sorted and processed at their estate winery while the fruit is still cold and fresh. \nWhen owner Tom Maas was stationed in Germany in the late 1960s on an army base in the midst of a vineyard\, he learned to love both wine and the vineyard. Decades later he was free to pursue his dream of owning and living in a vineyard. He started with 20 acres in 1999\, and now Tom and Kathleen own 113 acres where they dedicate their energy and resources to providing the best environment for growing premium grapes. He operates the vineyards with sustainable farming practices to ensure that the best fruit possible will be grown. \nDuring a Wine Society trip to Paso Robles\, we were fortunate to visit Pear Valley and enjoy a wood-fired oven pizza dinner along with their amazing wines. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $39 for members and $44 for guests. This buffet meal includes beef stroganoff served with butter noodles and seasonal fresh vegetables\, an Orange County salad of baby mixed greens\, toasted pistachios\, mandarin oranges\, goat cheese\, with a sweet shallot vinaigrette and warm artisan breads and rolls with sweet butter. \nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $44 for members and $49 for guests. This selection includes shrimp piccata served over whole wheat pasta with sautéed baby spinach\, an Orange County salad of baby mixed greens\, toasted pistachios\, mandarin oranges\, goat cheese\, with a sweet shallot vinaigrette and warm artisan breads and rolls with sweet butter. \nSign up on the OCWS website to attend this event. One of a handful of early pioneers\, Jerry Lohr\, was among the first to realize the inherent potential of Monterey and Paso Robles for producing high quality grapes and superb wines. \nJerry chose Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco district for its cool\, windy climate and rocky soils as ideal for Chardonnay\, Riesling\, Valdiguié and Pinot Noir. He recognized the potential of Paso Robles for growing Bordeaux and Rhone varietals\, especially Cabernet Sauvignon – given the area’s rich soils and dramatic temperature swings between warm days and cool nights. The spectacular Carol’s Vineyard (Napa Valley) is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $39 for members and $44 for guests. This buffet meal includes a grilled breast of chicken with Marsala wine sauce with mushrooms\, parmesan herb risotto\, seasonal baby Heirloom vegetables with a wedge salad of Butter lettuce\, roasted tomatoes\, crispy pancetta\, Bleu Cheese crumbles\, creamy peppercorn dressing and warm artisan breads and rolls with sweet butter. \nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $44 for members and $49 for guests. This selection includes roasted salmon filet with Bouillabaisse sauce\, chive couscous\, matignon of seasonal vegetables with a wedge salad of Butter lettuce\,  roasted tomatoes\, crispy pancetta\, Bleu Cheese crumbles\, creamy peppercorn dressing and warm artisan breads and rolls with sweet butter. \nDinner begins at 6:30 pm with the meeting following at 7:15 pm. Sign up on the OCWS website to attend. Attendees can either self-park in the hotel garage and get their ticket validated at OCWS check-in or pay $10 for valet parking. \nMembers may bring their own wine to enjoy and share during dinner. We do ask that you remove your bottle from the table during the tasting. Be sure to wear your nametag. \nAs we need to contract the meals with the hotel\, the last day to sign up or cancel and receive a refund is Sunday\, February 11. \n– Rich Skoczylas\, Director

SUMMARY:Winery Program: The Hess Collection Winery
DESCRIPTION:Our 2018 Winery Program starts with The Hess Collection Winery from Napa Valley. This winery has history and heritage to build on its foundation with grapes grown on the diverse hillsides of Mt. Veeder. Winemaker Randle Johnson\, having over three decades with the Hess family\, does what it takes to make top quality wines. Vintages are challenging with steep and rocky slopes. The wine making is traditional\, but also innovative to improve on each successive vintage. \nThe wines poured this evening will be from The Hess Collection\, Artezin and Calafia Cellars. Hess wines offers three distinct tiers of wines from Mount Veeder\, from Napa Valley\, and Hess Select\, which sources fruit from the Northern and Central Coasts of California. Hess Wines has distinguished itself as a premium producer of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. \nArtezin focuses on California’s original heirloom varietals\, including signature Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. These handcrafted wines emphasize pure varietal character. Every bottle highlights the inherent uniqueness of the wine’s terroir in the rugged North Coast\, with a focus on Mendocino. \nCalafia Cellars is a labor of love\, a personal brand and little-known gem of a winery started by Randle and his wife MaryLee in St. Helena. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $39 for members and $44 for guests. The buffet meal includes a breast of chicken with mustard seed cream sauce\, rosemary roasted pee wee potatoes and charred seasonal vegetables with a California Caesar salad with toasted pepitas\, chopped Romaine\, heirloom cherry tomatoes\, garlic croutons\, Parmesan cheese and creamy Caesar dressing\, and warm artisan breads and rolls. \nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $44 for members and $49 for guests. This selection includes a pan roasted local Sea Bass with a citrus sauce\, Quinoa\, charred seasonal vegetables\, with a California Caesar salad with toasted pepitas\, chopped Romaine\, heirloom cherry tomatoes\, garlic croutons\, Parmesan cheese and creamy Caesar dressing\, and warm artisan breads and rolls. \nAttendees can self park in the hotel garage and either get their ticket validated at the OCWS check-in or pay $10 for valet parking. Dinner begins at 6:30 pm with the meeting following at 7:15 pm. \nMembers may bring their own wine to enjoy and share during dinner. SUMMARY:Cass Winery and Seven Angels Cellars Winery Program
DESCRIPTION:Our April Winery Program presents two award-winning wineries from Paso Robles. These two wineries are relatively new and in just a few years\, each one has produced wines loved by the public and acclaimed by their peers. \nCass Vineyard is a newer Paso winery\, opening their doors in 2005. We’re told this occurred after Ted Plemons and Steve Cass became partners over a fancy dinner and a bottle of wine\, then another\, and another. \nCass winemaker\, Sterling Kragten\, will be pouring:\n• 2016 Roussanne\n• 2016 Oasis Rosé\n• 2015 Grenache\n• 2013 Malbec\n• 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon \n \nSeven Angels Cellars started in 2009 after winemaker Greg married Pamela and blended a family of seven children\, their “angels.” It is a family-owned winery producing small lots of exceptional award winning red and white wines. \nThis evening\, Greg and Pamela will be pouring:\n• 2014 Chardonnay\n• 2013 Confession\n• 2013 Chosen One\n• 2013 Petite Sirah \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $37 for members and $42 for guests. Dinner includes a salad of Market Greens with White Cheddar\, Chopped Egg\, Red Onion\, Spiced Pecans\, and Cranberries served with a Balsamic Vinaigrette\, an entrée of Grilled Breast of Chicken Piccata with Lemon Buerre Blanc and Capers\, Whipped Potatoes\, and Sautéed Spinach with Garlic and Slivered Almonds. \nWe offer a separate “Heart Healthy” table-served meal option for $42 for members and $47 for guests. This selection includes a meal of Market Greens with White Cheddar\, Chopped Egg\, Red Onion\, Spiced Pecans\, Cranberries served with a Balsamic Vinaigrette\, an entrée of Grilled Local Seabass\, Roasted Fingerling Potatoes\, and Sautéed Spinach with Garlic and Slivered Almonds. \nAttendees can self-park in the hotel garage and either get their ticket validated at OCWS check-in or pay $10 for valet parking. Dinner begins at 6:30 pm with the meeting following at approximately 7:30 pm. \nMembers may bring their own wine to enjoy and share during dinner. SUMMARY:The Brander Vineyard - March Winery Program
DESCRIPTION:The Wine Society is proud to present The Brander Vineyard as the second winery of the 2017 Winery Program series. \nWinemaker Fabian Bravo started his career as an Electrical Engineer working in aerospace. His growing interest in winemaking changed his life. His wine style keeps individual lots of grapes (from specific blocks or sub-blocks in the vineyard) separate during fermentation. This provides a greater variety of options by producing individual lots based on clonal selection or ripeness of the grapes at harvest. Thus\, the finished wines have greater nuance and complexity than would otherwise be possible. \nBrander is situated on 52 acres of land just east of Los Olivos\, property that was purchased by the Brander family in 1974. The site was chosen for its favorable combination of factors: a gently south-facing aspect\, excellent soil\, and a climate ideally suited to growing the grape varieties found in the Bordeaux region of France. The first vines on the property were planted in 1975\, with Sauvignon Blanc\, Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot\, and Semillon. \nWinemaker Fabian Bravo wine style keeps individual lots of grapes (from specific blocks or sub-blocks in the vineyard) separate during fermentation. This provides a greater variety of options by producing individual lots based on clonal selection or ripeness of the grapes at harvest. In the 2016 OCFEC Commercial Wine Competition\, the Brander 2015 Sauvignon Blanc won the Chairman’s Award. Many other Brander wines have won numerous awards year after year in this Competition. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $37 for members and $42 for guests. SUMMARY:Alexander Valley Winery Program
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Winery Program starts with Alexander Valley Vineyards. Their first bottling\, Cabernet Sauvignon\, started on Memorial Day 1968 with two 50-gallon barrels and was rated “surprisingly good.” Since then\, decades of experience tying vineyard and winery together give Alexander Valley Vineyards total control of wine production\, resulting in rich\, complex wines. \nWinemaker Kevin Hall has worked at Sebastiani Vineyards\, R.H. Phillips and wineries in Germany and New Zealand. Kevin’s work experiences gave him irreplaceable insight that he still uses today and easily explains why Kevin’s wines have a traditional old world style. \nKevin uses in-barrel fermentation\, new oak\, and different coopers and wood sources to increase both nuance and complexity of wines. He blends two or more grape varieties or two or more clones of the same variety. His knowledge\, combined with his innate talent\, yields incredible continuity in the flavor profile from vintage to vintage\, with one minor change – the wines just keep getting better and better. \nThe cost of the buffet meal is $37.00 for members and $42.00 for guests. Dinner includes a salad of Baby Mixed Greens with Fresh Raspberries\, Goat Cheese\, Candied Walnuts and Raspberry Vinaigrette\, along with warm Artisan Breads and Rolls with Sweet Butter. An entrée of Beef Stroganoff will be served with Butter and Parsley Noodles\, and Baby Mixed Winter Vegetables. \nWe offer a separate option of a “Heart Healthy” sit-down meal for $42.00 for members and $47.00 for guests. The February selection includes a table-served salad of Baby Mixed Greens with Fresh Raspberries\, Goat Cheese\, Candied Walnuts and Raspberry Vinaigrette\, with an entrée of Sautéed Salmon with Lemon Caper Sauce\, Chive Cous Cous\, and Baby Mixed Winter Vegetables. \nAttendees can self-park in the hotel garage and either get their ticket validated at OCWS check-in or pay $10 for valet parking.
