SUMMARY:Tear Down Courtyard
DESCRIPTION:After 3 1/2 gritty days and through daily obstacle courses of the OC Fair setting up around us\, our Courtyard set-up crew hope that our members and visitors enjoy a way to “Find Your Happy.” We are already making plans for the 50th anniversary for 2026 Courtyard at the OC Fair next year. \nThe efforts of our dedicated set-up crew will help the OCWS earn TWO of our largest sources of annual scholarships and get ready for the servers\, cashiers and stewards that will last throughout our upcoming events. \nNow\, it will all be torn down. We need your help as everything will be stowed away to get ready for next year. It would be helpful if you have a pickup truck. Please be respectful to our neighbor vendors as there will be activity around us. The teardown crew will meet on Monday\, Aug. 18 and moving out Tuesday\, Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Courtyard. \nAlso\, we may have the opportunity to purchase the live plants displayed in The Courtyard from Centennial Farm. Please bring cash only and a way to carry them out. You’ll know we took good care of them! \nPlease sign up directly at Les@ocws.org \, so we can plan for ever-changing updates and lunch. Cheers to the entire 2025 Courtyard Committee\, especially our teardown volunteers. \n—Leslie Hodowanec\, Courtyard Teardown Coordinator

SUMMARY:OCWS Winery Webinar Program—Jeff Runquist Wines
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Runquist has a passion for red wines. His goal in winemaking is: “work very hard to produce balanced wines…wines that will age and become more complex with time\, but wines that can also be enjoyed in their youth.” \nJeff’s wines are characterized by a fruit forward nature in both the aroma and flavor that provides a good representation of the grape used to make the wine. This is followed by a depth\, richness\, and complexity that is enhanced by aging in small oak barrels. The wines finish with a smooth aftertaste where the tannins are soft and mature. As a winemaker\, Jeff works to pack as much flavor and character into a wine as possible without stepping over the line and making a wine so tannic that aging is required to balance and round out the wine. \nInstead of growing his own grapes\, Jeff finds the finest growers growing the right varieties in the best locations and partners with them to provide him with fruit. This enables him the ability to produce wines with a wide variety of flavors and textures from throughout California. \nJeff does not make wine with the expectation that the consumer is going to age it to maximize its enjoyment. Over the past three decades\, he has developed and refined winemaking techniques and protocols to provide a rich\, full flavor without the burden of chalky\, astringent tannins. One of the advantages of managing the tannins in the wine is that they can carry a bit more fruit acid\, and it is this additional acid that helps the wine hold its fruit flavors as it ages. \nWine Ordering Offer: You have the option to order the wines. Proceed to the Jeff Runquist website at  jeffrunquistwines.com. Click on “Wines” and select the three wines for this webinar. These wines will cost $89\,  tax and shipping will be added. The wines to order include: \n2019 Barbera\, Dick Cooper Vineyards\, Amador \n2019 Tempranillo\, Liberty Oaks Vineyard\, Lodi \n2019 Petite Sirah\, Salman Vineyards\, Clarksburg \nMembers have to sign-up for this virtual webinar on our website to watch via Zoom. Sign ups close Wednesday\, May 12 at 5 pm. After you sign-up to attend\, you will receive a confirmation email by Thursday noon\, May 13\, with details to connect. SUMMARY:Winery Webinar Program—Russian River Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Russian River Vineyards winemaker\, Giovanni “Gio” Balistreri\, will be our featured speaker. He comes from four generations of farmers\, and he would not have it any other way. Gio is a farmer\, first and foremost. \nTo produce great wine\, Gio believes that you must first produce excellent fruit. And it is the essential character and flavor of that fruit\, when it is harvested\, that will determine its potential to become a superior wine. There is no shortcut. You must be there and manage the crop at every step. \nThe Russian River Valley is one of the world’s greatest winemaking regions where true devotees of great wine are familiar with the magic of this valley. So\, just over a decade ago\, he set out to make the most of an incredible environment to make great wine. The Russian River area enjoys warm summer days\, which are important for sugar production in grapes\, and cool night temperatures to preserve the acidity in the grapes. This provides a combination to achieve and maintain the delicate balance of sugar and acid. These attributes\, combined with rich and diverse soil conditions\, make the Russian River Valley a winemaker’s dream for Gio to work his magic. \nWine Ordering Offer: You have the option to order the wines at a 30% discount; tax and shipping fee will be added. This wine sale period extends from March 1 to April 12. \nClick to order Russian River Wines \nThe wines to order ($100 for all three) for the webinar include: \n2019 Chardonnay / Bacigalupi Vineyard \n2017 Pinot Noir / Classic Cuvee \n2016 Red Blend / Confluence \nNOTE: you must sign up separately on the website to attend this webinar on Zoom. Buying the wines does NOT sign you up for the webinar. \nSign-ups close 5 pm on Wednesday\, April 7. After you sign up to attend\, you will receive a confirmation email by Thursday Noon\, April 8 with details to connect. If you cannot find your confirmation\, contact Rich@ocws.org. \n– Leslie Hodowanec\, Director \n– Rich Skoczylas\, Director & Winery Program Chair

SUMMARY:Winery Webinar - Mineral Wines
DESCRIPTION:Our OCWS Winery Webinar for February features Brett Keller from Mineral Wines. \nCombining his passion for minerals with that of wine\, Mineral Wines was founded in 2009 by the Henkel and Keller families\, who grow grapes at the Cherokee Creek Vineyard in Angels Camp. Brett has been making wine in Calaveras County since 2003 and grapes are sourced from their Estate Vineyard which was first planted in 1993 and from various other vineyards\nin Calaveras County. \nBrett studied mining engineering and later viticulture and enology at Fresno State. He fell in love with wine and his wife\, Andrea\, in her hometown of Angels Camp\, the Land of Mark Twain. Brett and his daughter started collecting crystals outside their driveway at the famous Carson Hill Mine. They were awarded Best of Show in Tucson in 2012 and again in 2014\nfor their vivid displays of bentonite. \nEach of their wine varietal labels highlights minerals from their collection\, captured in watercolor by renowned artist\, Frederick Wilda. Besides  collecting award winning minerals\, Mineral Wines has collected nine Gold medals and 15 Silver medals in our last three OCWS competitions. Mineral Wines was going to be one of our Featured Wineries at the OC Fair (cancelled last summer)\, so we are pleased to invite them. \nBrett is offering the OCWS three Bordeaux wines for tasting at a 15% discount and half price for shipping\, which will be reflected in your order at checkout. His discussion includes “Crafting Delicious Meritage Wines” and will also include literature and recipes for finger foods. Log in to Mineralwines.com and use Promo Code OCWS20 at checkout. \n2016 Meritage $32\n2016 Merlot $28\n2017 Cabernet Franc $32 \nMembers will have to sign up on our website for the Mineral Wines Winery Webinar to watch via Zoom. SUMMARY:Winery Webinar-Rock Wall Wine Company
DESCRIPTION:We will start the New Year with one of our favorite winemakers\, Shauna Rosenblum. Her Rock Wall Wine Company\, located in the San Francisco East Bay on the decommissioned Alameda Naval Air Base\, produces great wines from grapes taken from the right place as a result of many long-term relationships with acclaimed vineyard owners. \nShauna follows what her late father\, Kent Rosenblum\, started by sourcing grapes from all over California to create a diverse winemaking environment with different styles\, varieties and regional flavor profiles. \nThe spectacular views at Rock Wall are of the San Francisco skyline. But\, their most important feature is being centrally located. Because of this\, they are able to bring Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley\, Zinfandel from Sonoma County\, Petite Sirah from Contra Costa County or Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands and start processing the grapes very shortly after they are picked. \nMembers have to sign-up for this Winery Webinar on our website to watch via Zoom. Sign-ups close Wednesday\, January 20 at 5 pm. After you sign-up to attend\, you will receive a confirmation email by Thursday at Noon\, January 21\, with details to connect. If you cannot find it\, contact Rich@ocws.org. \nWine Ordering Offer: You have the option to order the wines at a 30% discount; tax and shipping fee will be added. This wine sale period extends from January 1 to January 23. \nClick here to order Rock Wall Wines \nThe wines to be presented will be: \n2018 Sparkling Blanc de Noir \n2017 Russian River Chardonnay \n2018 Maggie’s Vineyard Zinfandel \nUse Promotion Code: OCWPVIP \nNOTE: You must sign up separately on the website to attend our virtual webinars. SUMMARY:Winery Webinar: Bushong Vintage Company

His style reflects his winemaking philosophy that wine is the unique culmination of science\, agriculture and art often resulting in crisp\, bright whites\, and rich\, bold reds. \nJason’s passion for wine is only further enriched by his passion for music and art. His tasting room in downtown Paso Robles features an old Star Wars pinball machine and a large collection of vinyl records that tasters are welcome to play and is a must visit when wine tasting in the Paso area. His passion for art is also reflected in his outstanding label art. \nThe wines being highlighted this month are Bushong’s 2018 Ananda (100% Pinot Noir)\, their Institutionalized Red Blend (40% Petite Sirah\, 20% Tannat\, 20% Syrah\, 20% Grenache)\, and the 2018 Power\, Corruption\, and Lies (67% Tannat\, 27% Syrah\, 6% Petite Sirah). \nAlthough it is not required to attend the program (but a definite enhancement to the experience)\, you have the option to order the three wines which Jason will be presenting at a special 50% discounted rate. SUMMARY:Virtual Winery Program with Big Nose Winery
DESCRIPTION:Please note:  Family members watching the webinar together only need to signup one member to attend this session.  This saves webinar connections for other members. \nThis month\, we will have a presentation by one of the founding members of Big Nose Winery. The Orange County Wine Society is very proud to introduce one of our very own Home Winemakers\, now an award-winning commercial winemaker\, Roger Mattar. \nStarting as amateur winemakers\, two families’ love of winemaking turned them into award-winning commercial winemakers. These are the Mattar & Severs families. Their love for great wine\, its complexity\, flavors and aromas intrigued them to delve into the process by which wonderful grapes emerged into fabulous wines to be shared with friends and family. \nTheir process started after getting their first round of grapes in 2012\, which is when they became home winemakers. Passions exploded and through many trials and errors\, hard work and late nights\, they still managed to have lots of fun. Thus\, Big Nose Wine was created and their dreams became a reality. For their first entry into a commercial competition\, they won two Double Gold awards\, their 2018 Rosé of Malbec (92 points) and 2018 Sauvignon Blanc (93 points). \nMembers can sign-up for the Big Nose Winery virtual seminar on our website to watch via Zoom. After you sign-up to attend\, you will receive a confirmation email with details on connecting. \nYou have the option to order the wines to be presented at a 20% discounted price to us; tax and shipping fee will be added. The wines include: the 2018 Malbec\, 2018 Merlot and the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. You may order these wines now!
