SUMMARY:Gold Medal Mini-Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The Gold Medal Mini-Tasting is a chance to taste many of the Gold Medal and Double Gold wines from this year’s Commercial Wine Competition. The tasting will feature different varietals that won Gold Medals and we try to obtain as many Double-Gold winners as possible. \nThis event is always a sell-out\, so please sign up early!  NOTE: If you are interested in hosting please contact George Cravens (george@ocws.org). This event is always very popular\, so we will need quite a few hosts. The weather should be nice for an outdoor tasting if you have space.  If you’d like to request a specific host site or to carpool with another member\, please add a comment on your sign-up. \nWhen possible\, the event will be held outside. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request; however\, your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your signup is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $35 for members and $40 for guests. \nDish: Each person/couple attending will sign up with their host site to bring a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 16-18 people. There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening (voted on by the attendees of each site). Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published in The Wine Press. \nWe are planning for 10 sites for this mini-tasting.  Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign up early as sites tend to fill quickly. Once sign-ups fill up\, please call the OCWS office to be added to the wait list. \nThe cut-off date for online sign-up is Friday\, Aug. 11. After this date\, please contact the OCWS office to determine availability. SUMMARY:Pinot Noir Mini Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Many consider Pinot Noir the “holy grail” of wine. This temperamental grape varietal requires warm daytime and cool evening temperatures and is partial to coastal climates. The Burgundy region of France’s Cote-d’Or region is well known for Pinot Noir where only Chardonnay is planted in greater abundance. In California\, plantings began in the 1940s with a significant push in Sonoma starting in the 1960s. Today\, high-quality Pinots are produced in Sonoma\, Mendocino and Santa Barbara counties of California\, as well as in Oregon and Washington. \nWhile Pinot Noir is quite well known as a red wine\, it has three close cousins that are also interesting.  Pinot Grigio/Gris is a very popular white wine. Pinot Blanc is less well known but is an excellent white wine. Pinot Noir is genetically unstable and occasionally a vine will have one or more canes that produce white (Pinot Blanc) grapes. Finally\, Pinot Meunier is one of the three main grape varieties used in Champagne (along with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). \nPinot Noir has great variation. One of the major factors affecting Pinot Noir is the amount of time spent in oak. From France\, Pinot Noir is rustic\, earthy and acidic. From Sonoma\, it’s lush with rich black cherry flavors and higher in alcohol than French Pinot Noir. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please e-mail George Cravens (george@ocws.org). You may need to sign up and pay until hosts are selected. Reimbursement will be made for all host sites. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request; however\, your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $35 for members and $40 for guests. \nDish: Each person/couple attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish or dessert) to serve a small portion to 18 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting\, in this case Pinot Noir. Please coordinate your food selection with your host site to ensure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning a maximum of eight sites for this Mini-Tasting so the limit is 112 attendees (plus hosts).  Mini-Tastings tend to be popular\, so we encourage you to sign-up early. DESCRIPTION:NOTE:  The date for the Rhone Wine mini-tasting has changed due to an unforeseen conflict that arose after the January issue of the Winepress was completed and the event had been posted on the OCWS Website.  The Mini-tasting has been rescheduled to Saturday March 4\, 2023. \nFor the upcoming mini-tasting\, we plan to showcase one Rhone white followed by four Rhone red wines. The Rhone region in France has been producing wines since pre-Roman times. \nThe mini-tasting plans to explore a number of the popular varietals and blends the region is known for as well as comparing California wines to similar French wines. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please e-mail George Cravens (george@ocws.org). You may need to sign up and pay until hosts are selected. Reimbursement will be made for all host sites. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request (please add a note on your signup if there is a specific location you would like\, or a group of people you want to attend with). Your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $35 for members and $40 for guests. \nDish: Each person attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 16 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting. Please coordinate your food selection with your host site to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning a maximum of eight sites for this mini-tasting so the limit is 112 attendees (plus hosts). Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly. If the sign-ups are full on the website\, please call the office to be put on a waiting list. \nDue to the advance purchase of wines\, you will not receive a refund after the cancellation deadline. The December Mini-Tasting will feature a range of Red wines that pair well with these foods. The guests will rate the wines tasted blind in pairs\, and then discuss their ratings. Overall ratings from each site will be published in the wrap-up article. \nThis Mini-Tasting will feature somewhat higher-end wines\, so the cost has increased by $5 to cover the costs. \nHosts: Mini-Tastings are held at various host sites around Orange County. If you would like to host this event\, please e-mail George Cravens at George@ocws.org or call him at 949-510-5318. You may need to sign up and pay until hosts are selected. Reimbursement will be made for all host sites. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request; however\, your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. The cost to attend the tasting is $35 for members and $40 for guests. \nMini Overview: Each person/couple attending brings a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) ready to serve a small portion to 16 people. The dish ideally should be designed to match the theme of the tasting. Please coordinate your food selection with your host site to assure an appropriate balance of food types served during the evening. The attendees will vote on Chef of the Evening\, and a special bottle of wine will be awarded to the winner of the vote. Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. Please plan on arriving promptly at 6 pm so the event can get started on time. You are invited to bring your own wine glasses for tasting\, keep in mind the wines are served in flights of two. \nWe are planning a maximum of seven sites for this mini-tasting\, so the limit is 98 attendees (plus hosts). Due to the high popularity of our Mini-Tasting Programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly. The cut-off date for online sign-up is Monday\, November 21. After this date\, or if the website says no tickets are available\, please contact the OCWS office to be added to the waiting list. If the event fills up quickly\, we will look into adding additional sites and expanding the number of available tickets. The cancellation deadline is Monday\, November 28 for a refund. DESCRIPTION:The OCWS Varietal Hours are coming back!  Join us starting Monday\, August 29 at 7 pm and every other Monday at 7 pm\, for a virtual happy hour that you can enjoy from home! \nWhat are the advantages of the Varietal Hour? \n\nNo need to clean your house for guests\, but you can still see your friends.\nNo need to drive home after enjoying a few glasses of wine!\nNo need to share your wine with others (more for you)\, except to share a description of what you are enjoying with fellow attendees.\nYou can see your OCWS friends\, even if they are half way across the globe.\nYou can try new wines you wouldn’t normally try when following the theme of the week.\nYou can hear about great wines before you try them (or not so great wines so you don’t have to try them).\nYou can come as you are and don’t need to dress up!\nYou can purchase a new wine or find something in your cellar that fits the theme.\nIt’s a FREE event!\n\nEven though this event is FREE\, you will need to register on the OCWS website by the Sunday night before the event. A link for the meeting is emailed to you on the day of the event. \nWe are also looking for hosts for each week for future varietal hours. SUMMARY:Gold Medal Mini-Tasting
DESCRIPTION:The Gold Medal Mini-Tasting is a chance to taste many of the Gold Medal and Double Gold wines from this year’s Commercial Wine Competition. The tasting will feature different varietals that won Gold Medals and we try to obtain as many Double Gold winners as possible. \nThis event is always a sell-out\, so please sign up early!  NOTE:  If you are interested in hosting\, please contact George Cravens by email at George@ocws.org. If you’d like to request a specific host site or to carpool with another member\, please add a comment on your sign-up. \nWhen possible\, the event will be held outside. \nLocations: Host sites and directions will be announced to those attending approximately one week prior to the event. We try to place you at the location nearest your home or to accommodate your specific site request; however\, your assigned host site is also based on the order in which your sign-up is received in the OCWS office. \nCost: The cost to attend the tasting is $30 for members and $35 for guests. \nDish: Each person/couple attending will sign up with their host site to bring a potluck dish (appetizer\, entrée\, side dish\, or dessert) to serve a small portion to 16-18 people. There will be a special bottle of wine that evening as a prize for Chef of the Evening (voted on by the attendees of each site). Our winning Chefs of the Evening can have their recipe published on the OCWS website. \nWe are planning for ten sites for this Mini-Tasting. Sign-ups will open on Monday\, July 11. Due to the high attendance at our Mini-Tasting programs\, we encourage you to sign-up early as sites tend to fill quickly. Once sign-ups fill up\, please call the OCWS office to be added to the waiting list. \nThe cut-off date for online sign-up is Friday\, August 12. After this date\, please contact the OCWS office to determine availability.
