DESCRIPTION:The OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition is one of the largest single events that the OCWS coordinates and runs each year.  With an average of upwards of 2\,500 wines being judged in any given year by a prestigious panel of 90 judges of the caliber of such well known winemakers as Steve Lohr\, Carol Shelton\, Joseph S. DESCRIPTION:The 46th OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition will be held June 4-5th at the Hilton Hotel in Costa Mesa. \nThe Orange County Wine Society and the OC Fair and Event Center sponsor the Competition which judges wines made only from grapes grown in California. There are no entry fees and the wines are judged by professional winemakers or winery principals. The wines are cataloged by varietal\, price and sugar levels. SUMMARY:Peppertree Canyon—Orange County’s Well-Hidden Gem
DESCRIPTION:I recently had the distinct honor of visiting Peppertree Canyon Farm to interview Owner/Winemaker\, Lynn Hess\, and found not just a winemaker\, but a person with great passion for our environment\, both globally and locally. And someone who\, along with her husband\, Mike\, has created a small oasis in the midst of the Tustin hills of Orange County that they lovingly refer to as “Tustiny.” \nLynn started winemaking from kits with the OCWS and initially\, never intended to be a winemaker but\, after not finding what she felt was a suitable winemaker for their venture\, she took enology and viticulture classes everywhere she possibly could\, from Davis to Mira Costa and San Marcos to Temecula. She was mentored by winemakers at a number of wineries in San Diego and Temecula and eventually interned at Hart. Her passion was then up and running at what could only be described as full stride. \nLynn and Mike purchased four acres in the Tustin hills in 2013\, with Mike’s vision of planting a Tuscan farm and making olive oils and Brunellos. They planted over 100 olive trees (Frantoios\, Pendolinos and Leccinos) and over 1\,400 vines\, mostly Sangiovese. The property was fill dirt before they began creating their spectacular home and surrounding property. They have formed a wonderful partnership of love and respect\, as Lynn is the winemaker\, while Mike makes the olive oils\, which are milled within a few hours of the olives being hand-harvested. \nTheir determination to help the environment has led Peppertree Canyon to be a one-of-a-kind\, fully sustainable property that boasts over 50 fruit trees\, including fig\, pomegranate\, persimmon\, plum\, pluot\, apricot\, nectarine\, cherry\, apple\, mango\, kiwi\, and avocado\, along with over 20 citrus trees of every varietal one can imagine. \nThey also have a seasonal herb and vegetable garden\, as well as an assortment of berries. Lynn and I spoke of the bees that inhabit the property and their honey making endeavors which currently produces only enough annually for their family and friends. She and Mike are so environmentally conscientious that when the beehives infringe on an area of the property unacceptable to them\, they relocate the hives to other areas of the property. Lynn has also designed and built their own reservoir that collects rainwater and run off from neighboring properties\, which irrigates their property and keeps the use of public water to a minimum and used only when absolutely necessary. \nLynn is most proud of their authenticity\, with their wine being 100% OC grown onsite. They only make one wine\, a predominantly Sangiovese blend (90% Sangiovese\, 5% Petite Syrah\, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) from biodynamically farmed grapes they planted and nurture. \nIf I wrote everything I learned from Lynn and every aspect of Peppertree Canyon that impressed me\, this article would take up this entire edition of The Wine Press. DESCRIPTION:LET’S PLAY BALL! Proudly wear your team’s colors while enjoying fabulous food and wine and dancing to live entertainment at the 2018 Spring Membership BBQ in The Courtyard at the OC Fairgrounds on Saturday\, April 21 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Sign-ups are now open online\, and space is limited.  \nTickets are a great deal at just $45 for members and $50 for guests. \nWear your colors proudly! Team jerseys\, tees and shirts\, whether bowling\, baseball\, basketball\, football\, soccer\, golf or tennis\, professional\, college\, high school\, little league are all acceptable! Show where your heart lies and your winning spirit! \nOur own OCWS Cook’s Caucus will be bringing new meaning to America’s favorite pastime with an amazing array of sports inspired appetizers\, main courses\, side dishes and desserts. \nAs with any OCWS member event\, help is needed to make this day a success\, and your consideration in joining the team for a short stint to set-up\, decorate\, serve\, pour wine or clean-up will be greatly appreciated. SUMMARY:2017 Annual OCWS Business Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Business Meeting\, which is free to all OCWS members\, will be held this year on Friday\, September 8\, beginning promptly at 7:00 pm at Baja Blues located within the fairgrounds. There is no limitation on the number of members who may attend\, however\, the meeting is strictly for members only. There is no charge to attend\, although any member who signs up and does not attend will be charged $25. The OCWS is required to pay for the number of meals confirmed which is based on the actual number of members who have signed up. \nPlease sign up at the OCWS website. All reservations must be received no later than Friday\, September 1. The OCWS is required to have an accurate count to the caterer shortly thereafter. \nThis is the most important member meeting of the OCWS year as it offers an overview of the year’s activities and a financial summary of the 2016/17 OCWS Board year. Volunteer awards will be presented after the business presentations. Thereafter\, the current OCWS Board of Directors will be available to answer questions and listen to any comments from the general membership. The meeting is conducted in accordance with OCWS Bylaws and government regulations for 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. \nAfter presentations and an OCWS question and answer session\, candidates for the 2017/18 Board year will be introduced and will present their qualifications and interests as potential OCWS Board members. This meeting provides the best opportunity for members to meet the candidates and learn about their interests and objectives for the next Board year. \nPlease note that no food or drinks will be served until the conclusion of the business portion of the meeting (approximately 90 minutes). We will conclude the evening with a light catered meal\, accompanied by wines from the OCWS cellar. Some members choose to bring their own wines to this event and\, if you do so\, we ask that you please refrain from opening your wine until the meal has commenced following the end of the meeting. \nYour 2016/17 OCWS Board of Directors look forward to seeing you as we review our 41st year and look forward to our 42nd. \n– Fran Gitsham\, Director
